My sister and I were on our way home from a conference in North Carolina yesterday when we got the news that a former member of a group we’re in had committed suicide that morning. Though we were not directly affected, it was a somber trip back, spent contacting our dear friends who were closest to him.
When things like this happen, it’s easy to question as to what could have been done to prevent it from happening. People will always have hidden struggles that we don’t know about, deep hurts and issues that others will rarely see. And as much as we wish to prevent things like this, there are times when we won’t be able to. But what we can do is learn from it and use every second we have with those around us to love and encourage, giving hope and life to the ones who just might need it the most.
“Welcome the present moment as if you had invited it. It is all we ever have…”
Be on purpose about making the most of the time that you are blessed with, not only for those in your life, but also for yourself. At the end of the day, each one of us is living on borrowed time. And the only time that will ever matter the most is the present.
I love this because so many of us are busy trying to make the future happen we forget what’s happening right in front of us. With technology we have forgotten to pay attention to the people around us. We forget to actually connect and build. We forget to enjoy the blessings that we have right now. The moments we have with our family, friends and at the workplace. We always forget to make the moments count

That is very true, often times what we don’t realize is that some of the most important things in the world are not found on a screen, but rather in the seemingly simple things of life that God has blessed us to have. Something that my dad often points out is that all of the superficial things we deem important are not so important at all. If in the span of a life, someone becomes very successful and influential, but does not truly touch and impact the lives of others, it is all for nothing.

I’m sorry to hear about this. You never really know what’s going on with other people. I agree with the sentiment that all we have is now and we should make the best we can with it and the people by our side.

Great blog post. I too often find myself wishing for the weekend or an event I have planned when really I should be living in the now and making the most of the present!

Yes! That is so understandable, it literally takes a deliberate decision to live in the present.

It really is sad to know that others are struggling without anyone ever even knowing. God give us grace to be able to make a difference in the lives of others.

I really love this post. Your words are so true. We do have to make every moment count not just for the people around us but mainly for ourselves first. I believe that if a person is happy with himself/herself first, only then he/she can make others happy.
Suicide is a really sad thing. It’s a rash step ofcourse but then you never really know of one’s struggles.

Thank you Mabelle, I really appreciate it. And I definitely agree with you that in order to share true happiness and joy, one must first be content within themselves. What you said reminded me of Robin Williams, he spent all those years trying to make others happy but yet in the end was not truly happy himself. It really is hard to tell what goes on beneath the surface.
